Hicham Chajai was born in France with Moroccan roots. While he studied engineering in Paris, he had the opportunity in 1997 to follow a Calligraphic course with the well-known Syrian Master
Frédéric Fattal. He taught him the rigorous techniques of Diwani and Koufi styles. Then the creativity and passion for this art enabled Hicham Chajai to
develop its own expression. His studies and work brought him to many countries such as Al-Andaluz, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, and Iran. His double culture, the continuous exchanges with local artists of all these regions enhanced his imagination and re-enforced his willingness to build bridges between Cultures. He already organized successful exhibitions in Africa (Angola), in the Middle East (Dubai, Doha) Europe (France, Italy) and continues to propose classes and workshops.
His creations are all based on names, proverbs and poems. For each text, a deep investigation is made in order to discover the harmony between the letter and the thematic. Sometime, the letter is guiding the shape and in other cases, it is the model which works the letter. Some pieces are even mixing French with Arabic (Latin letters hidden in the Arabic ones).
